Yellow reflects navigating growth and change. The sliding doors act as a barrier that limits the space beyond; however, their layered colors and uniform patterns provide a sense of comfort, also making it a barrier that provides a safe space to grow from. Being not fully open or closed signifies finding a balance in moving forward.
Based off of sketches I slowly made over a 3-month period in Fall 2024 when I still lived in WI, that were inspired by the vibrant colors of Utah’s arches. The sketches were kept in mind to be my next painting and the time finally came when I was back home in Texas, after about 2 years of not painting.
Due to the gap of time of not painting, my brushstrokes felt unnatural, adding on the “final” layers of paint felt intimidating, and I became frustrated when what felt right to me strayed from the sketches (most discontent around progress shot 7/12). Now, looking back in hindsight, this painting was a nice refresher on not being hung up about making “mistakes” and not forcing a direction that felt wrong to me.
