2. Large Painting

Size: 40 x 40 in or 30 x 40 in
Medium: Acrylic on canvas

Planning to start a large painting in March post trip!

Subject-matter-wise, I’m thinking of doing a simplified tree. For color and execution, currently thinking of pastels and only using one brush, but still unsure.

Main goal of this work to is to challenge myself and do something a bit different from my typical regarding style.

Why are the paintings unvarnished?

From what I understand, varnishing is not needed for acrylic (the medium I use), but it can provide an extra level of protection and slightly alter the appearance of a painting.

Personally, I do not like the look of varnish because it makes the brushwork and layers of paint (sometimes I use different acrylic brands / types, which can result in a variety of sheens on the final work) appear more uniform, and I like the soft look the paintings have as is, for it gives a more quiet touch.
Also, at a personal level, even though I value my work, the concept of preserving something beyond its time isn’t particularly appealing to me.

On that note, if you enjoy my paintings and own one, I would not be offended if you choose to have it varnished! But, I hope it’s not a gloss finish.
